It started raining on Saturday around 3:00pm. There really wasn't any wind to speak of. There was flash flooding because the rain came suddenly and lasted a long time. Then on Sunday morning more rain and the wind started to really pick up. We watched the 100 year old pine trees along our back lot line twist and turn. The wind was coming from all directions. The ground was soaked and all of the reports were warning of downed trees which equals power outages. Sure enough, just as we sat down for lunch, the power went off. It stayed off until 9:45pm Sunday evening. The hardest part of not having power was feeling completely blocked off from knowing what was going on. We had been glued to the Weather Channel and the local news stations earlier in the day. Now we didn't know what the situation was. How many were without power? How long would it last? Was there flooding to be aware of? These thoughts all ran through our minds. We tuned into the local news station on the radio. They were trying their best to keep listeners informed but really didn't have any useful information for us. Power was out for over 650,000 people in Massachusetts. It was going to take time to clean up the damage and restore power because the storm was so widespread. We were without power for 10 hours. I think we lucked out. Neighboring communities are still without power today.

Hurricane Irene
We made it through the storm without too much trouble. It pays to be a good scout and come prepared. We spent some time making sure the basement floor was clear of anything that might be damaged if it happened to flood. We also installed downspout extenders. They help direct the flow of water farther out into the yard, keeping the water away from the foundation of the house. The volume of water that flows off of our roof is high. The eaves and downspouts were working overtime during the storm.
